The Digital Multimedia Edition of Joyce’s 1916 A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has been created by a team of researchers from UCD’s Nation, Genre and Gender Project, in association with Athena Media, with support from the Irish Research Council and UCD Research and Innovation.

Editorial team

Prof. Gerardine Meaney is Professor of Cultural Theory in the School of English, Drama and Film at UCD. She is co-author with Mary O’Dowd and Bernadette Whelan of Reading the Irish Woman: Studies in Cultural Encounters and Exchange, 1714 – 1960 (Liverpool University Press, 2013) and sole author of Gender, Ireland and Cultural Change (New York: Routledge, 2010), Nora, Ireland into Film Series (Cork University Press, 2004), (Un)like Subjects: Women, Theory, Fiction (Routledge, 1993, 2012), and of over 20 articles and book chapters on gender and culture. She was one of the major co-editors of the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing: Women’s Writing and Traditions, volumes 4 and 5 (Cork: Cork University Press, 2002). Previous digital projects include an iPad App of James Joyce’s short story, ‘The Dead’ and Joyce’s Dublin.

Dr. Maria Mulvany is a researcher at the UCD School of English, Drama and Film. She completed her PhD in 2016 on the topic of spectrality and transgenerational trauma in contemporary Irish fiction. Her research and teaching interests include gender and sexuality studies, Irish literature, psychoanalysis and critical theory.

Dr. Karen Wade is a postdoctoral research fellow in the UCD School of English, Drama and Film. Her work is primarily concerned with interdisciplinary and digital humanities methodologies, particularly social network analysis and topic modelling.  Other research interests include new media, 19th-century literature and publishing cultures, and autobiography.

Production partners

The audiobook of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has been created by Athena Media, an award-winning transmedia production company led by Helen Shaw, which is based in The Digital Hub Dublin and MediaCityUK Manchester. Athena Media make factual content for broadcast and online media, specialising in online audio publishing.
